LSM/AdvFS: size and number of volumes

Hi managers,

A question regarding domains in AdvFS based on LSM-volumes.

Configuration: Alpha 4100, DU3.2d, 2 KZPSA per Host, each with one HSZ40 and a
lot of RZ29Bs per KZPSA.
We configured single-disk units on the HSZ40 and mirror one HSZ with the other
per LSM.

The question is:
Is it better
1.) to use ONE large mirrored volumes (i.e. 30-40 G per plex) and create a
domain on it
or
2.) to use several smaller volumes ( one plex consisting of one RZ29) and
create the domain with several volumes.

I would rather prefer solution 2, because it reduces the possibility of
disk-failure and offers shorter recovery-times.
But the LSM-diskgroup and the AdvFS-domain both have more volumes to maintain.

I would like to know your opinion about the performance / stability impact,.
Is there a known limit for volumes in a diskgroup / domain?
How have you done it?

Thanks in advance

Peter
