The consensus (thanks to those who replied so promptly!!!) was
that there was a fundamental hardware error, and that the system
was crashing early in the boot process, before the swap partition
was defined. Respondants didn't think having added a second swap
partition would have caused this problem, nor did they think a bad
system disk would prevent the cdrom from booting.
Subsequent inhouse information revealed that the 128MB of additional
memory I added to the system may have been questionable memory removed
from another machine with crashing problems...%:^( - looks like they
need a better policy for dealing with questionable parts here!!
