Recover data past End of Tape?

OK. I finally did it. I overwrote the first one or two tar archives on
a tape that had 18 total archives. I'm done kicking myself. But those
archives past the new End of Tape marker are begging me to resque them.
They're there. I know it. I can hear them. What to do?

I've searched the osf-managers archive back to 1994 and am baffled by
not finding a SUMMAY on this problem. I can't believe it. As easy as
this is to do in the unix world, I would expect there to be a widely
published, well-tested solution to this maddening mistake. I was
unsuccessful in finding any mention in the Unix Guru Universe links to
tutorials and articles.

I can see that this question might not be considered appropriate for a
DU-specific list since it is surely a unix-wide conundrum, but I thought
I'd broach it here. The wealth of expert experience here is astounding
and there must be someone who can go further than "nope, you're out'a
luck, might as well go ahead and hang yourself".

Thanks in advance,
-Neil
