A few days ago I asked:

>Everything, except sendmail, seems to accept this. I.e., mail sent to
>this account bounces. I believe that the reason is simply that sendmail
>as configured should not care about case, so it probably just tries to
>lowercase the mail id and then fails to deliver.

>Can I change this behaviour in a simple way for this account only?
>Or do I have to change it into all lowercase characters? This is on
>Digital UNIX 3.2-D

As expected by now, I had several answers quickly:

I have been struggling with C2 on machines running 3.x and
I have spoken with a DEC engineer about usernames and group
names that begin with uppercase letters. The word from my
engineer is that usernames and group names can have uppercase
for all the letters except the first.

I went thru this problem last year.. I updated to sendmail V8 (DEC ships
IDA). It's part of the MAILER definitions in the sendmail.cf file. You'd
have to adjust the m4 files.. You'd need to find the docs on the local
mailer flags. Sendmail is changing it to lower case. I told my marketing
guys the clients can print up there addresses in either mixed or upper
case, but the accounts have to be lower case only.. It's MUCH easier that
way.

I don't know about 3.2D but there is a patch on 3.2G for this problem.
The patch number is OSFPAT00015401375. Check with your local CSC to see
if it exists for 3.2D. Here is the README :

This patch corrects the following:

 - This patch corrects several mail problems

 - This patch fixes two problems with the mail utility :
o Mail cannot be sent to usernames consisting of uppercase and lowercase.
o Mail fails when a large distribution list is used.

So much for Digital UNIX 3.2x I also contacted our local Digital support,
and after a few days they reported back, that mixed case mail ids work
fine under Digital UNIX 4.0x. Since we are soon going to upgrade I decided
to make a temporary hack instead of applying patches. I added a new userid
in lowercase with an otherwise identical password file line. This also
works fine as long as the MAIL environmental variable is set to point to
the lowercase name.

Thanks for all help,

Bjorn
