UPDATE: is CDE always this flakey?

This cookie seems to be pretty hot so I though that an update
is in order....

Respondants fall into two camps...

Those who suffer from frozen CDE with enough regularity to be
unhappy about it (polite description) and those who's experience
is so solid that they cannot believe that it ever happens.

Well it happens, it happens too frequently and it happens to
more people than is acceptable.

But why...

Some seem to think that it may be to do with the swap mode.

Some seem to think that it is to do with running out of processes.

I'm still trying to come to some conclusions on the swap front.
I will lay my money on running out of processes. A simple
experiment just start a dozen or so xterms and watch your cde
grind to a halt. If you are lucky you will get a little popup
telling you that there are no more processes, howoever...

This is PATHETIC - wake up DEC!!!!! what use is a state of
the art workstation that is set up for 64 user processes.
What is worse - why does it die when it runs out?

I get better desktop performance from my old 33MHz 486
running Linux fvwm.

My question now is...

How do I increase the number of processes to something more
appropriate?

Is this doconfig time?
