Dear Managers,
I wrote about my problem some days ago, but I have not become nearer
to the solution. Unexplainable phenomena puts me into the hard tro-
ubles. Let me to remind briefly the content of my previous letter
and then to describe some new facts.
I use Digital Unix 3.2c. My ALPHA has interface ln0 with IP address
194.44.183.181. Alpha is connected with HUB Compex microHUB TP3000/
by twisted pair. HUB does not indicate connection by lighting. But
when I connect HUB with IBM PC with the same cable, it is OK.
Alpha does not indicate any network damages during the loading.
Netstat-command sees interface ln0. I only noted message during
the loading: "Writing to routing socket. File exists", but I
do not now what does it mean. Command "netstat -I ln0 -s" gives
the following:

2783 seconds since last zeroed
 0 bytes received
8071 bytes sent
 0 data blocks received
 84 data blocks sent
  0 multicast bytes received
  0 multicast blocks received
8071 multicast bytes sent
 84 multicast blocks sent
and after that raw there are only zeroes.
When I put out cable from the HUB, I see regular messages
"Lost carrier: check connector". When I put in cable again,
these messages disappear. But HUB does not light and ping
with Alpha does not work. (I'd like to note, that LI-indi-
cator does not light). In other words, Alpha "feels" HUB,
but HUB does not "feel" Alpha.
The message during the loading Unix is:
ln0: DEC LANCE Module Name: PMAD-BA
   ln0 at tc0 slot 7
ln0: DEC LANCE Ethernet Interface, hardware address: 08-00-2B-3B-46-BC
After I go to the >>> prompt, I observe such results. After
"Show config":

<baranowskit_at_gdynia_at_genesis.prokom.gdynia.pl> supposed, that
the reason is in pinout of my card. I tried to connect Alpha
and PC directly with crossed cable. Result was the same: ping
does not work, after disconnecting Alpha say "Lost carrier:
check connector", after reconnecting this message disappear.
I'd like to note that with straight cable and direct connecting
Alpha say "Lost carrier: check connectior" regulary. And, of
course, HUB with crossed cable does not light also.
Some days ago I replaced files /etc/passwd and
/tcb/files/auth/r/root with corresponding ..proto-files,
because Alpha did not recognize any old passwords. But I
do not think, that action could influence on card. Or, may be?

What is the probable reason? Does net card on the Alpha
out of order or some programming setups are needed? May be,
I must edit or create some files? How to test my Ethernet card?

 With hope on reply,
