When I recently upgraded my disk server from a DEC 3000 to an
AlphaSwerver 800 I got stuck with two narrow RZ29B:s that previously
had been mounted internally in the DEC 3000. In order to be able to
use these disks I bought two Storage Works carriers from a 3rd party
dealer.
I don't know wether these are DEC original parts as there are no
references to Digital in the documentation (one A4 paper) but it is
clear that the model number if this part is 103-CAD.
The AS800 has three external SCSI channels (KZPAA controllers) of
which are connected to a split bus BA356 (BA35X) and the remaining
channel to a BA364 (four SW slots and one 5.25").
My problem now is that I have great difficulties in using the new
carriers in the BA35 cabinet but in the BA364 cabinet there are no
problems. The problems themselves show symptoms I normally associate
with SCSI ID conflicts or terminations problems - drives registering
themselves on all SCSI ID:s, LUNs showing for drives who shouldn't
have LUNs like that and so on.
All of this makes me suspect that I have either connected the SCSI ID
cables incorrectly or set the DIP switches of the SW carrier
incorrectly. This second possibility is somewhat disturbing as I
followed the installation instructions for the carrier quite
slavishly. According to instructions, it is normally the shelf that
sets the SCSI ID of a drive. There is also a table with different
jumper settings:
SCSI ID Switch number

5 On Off On Off Off Off Off Off
6 Off On On Off Off Off Off Off
7 On On On Off Off Off Off Off

I went for using the "Shelf Address" settings.
The problem could this time be fixed by simply not using the BA35
shelf, but I'm still curious. If anybody has any idea about what I
might be doing wrong, pleas let me know.
