Changing resolutions

I know that this question has been asked before since I looked through
the archives and found the answer to it. However, the answer didn't work
for me.

I have a 1000A 5/333. When it boots up, it shows a CDE login. The
problem is that the resolution is too high for the monitor I'm using.
What I want to do is change the resolution to 1024x768 with a refresh
rate that my SVGA monitor can deal with.

I have tried changing the files:

/usr/var/dt/Xservers and /usr/dt/config/Xservers to use the -screen 1024
option, but the monitor still can't display it. How do I set the refresh
rate? What are allowable values? Which of these two files is the right
one to edit?

Thanks!
