Q: Changing Screen Resolution on a 3000/M300

I finally am stumped.

We have a 3000/M300 (4.0B) and a 3000/400 (3.2G), both have 1280x1024
screen resolutions at what looks like 60Hz.

We would like to have them run at 1024x768 at 72Hz.

>From this managers list, we made changes to /var/X11/xdm/Xservers
(for xdm) and /usr/dt/config/Xservers (for cde) that included the line:

:0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -nice -2 -screen 1024 -vsync 72

This did not work, either restarting the X server or rebooting the
host.

Is it even possible with the built-in video cards on these units?
