Frequently Asked Questions About Unsubscribing From Alpha-OSF-Managers
~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Q1: How can I unsubscribe from the alpha-osf-managers list?
A1: Send one of the following two commands to majordomo_at_ornl.gov:
        (1) unsubscribe alpha-osf-managers
        (2) unsubscribe alpha-osf-managers ADDRESS
Command (1) is for people whose return address hasn't changed since
they subscribed to the list. Command (2) is for people whose address
*has* changed; the supplied ADDRESS must be the address used at the
time you subscribed to the list.
Q2: How do I know what address I'm subscribed to the list under?
A2: When you joined the list, Majordomo sent you a welcome message that
included the exact command (2) required to unsubscribe from the
list. It also suggested you retain that message for future reference.
Q3: OK, I'm a dummy, I didn't save the welcome message and I can't
remember my old address. What should I do?
A3: Ask the list owner, Dave Sill <de5_at_ornl.gov>, to look up your
subscription address. Give him as many hints as you can: if you
subscribed when you worked for General Widgets, tell him what your
e-mail address there looked like, e.g., smith_at_general-widgets.com.
If your actual address was J.Smith_at_MailHub.General-Widgets.Com, he'll
find it.
Q4: OK, I'm *really* a dummy, I didn't save the welcome message, I
didn't save this FAQ, and I forgot who the list owner is. Should I
post an unsubscribe request to the list?
A4: NO! It's much more honorable to suffer a week's worth of list
mail, on average, until the next regular posting of the list
information (which contains Dave's address) than to publicly display
your ignorance and annoy the over 2000 readers of the list.
Q5: Why doesn't Dave include unsubscribe instructions at the top or
bottom of each message like the Widget-Lovers list?
A5: That's a good question. Luckily, Dave has a couple good
answers. First, it's a waste of bandwidth. Second, the list doesn't
use Majordomo's resend program (which supports the per-message
headers/footers); it uses a customized resender that does a better job
of enforcing the list policies, and Dave is too busy to hack such
dubious features into it.
