We recently got several "au" model Personal Workstations, and
they came with CDs with the rather confusing title ...
Digital UNIX V4.0C Operating System
Includes DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0B
What I'd like to know is whether I could use these CDs to install
V4 on our older Alpha machines (AlphaServer 2100 4/200 and 5/250,
plus some venerable old DEC 3000 boxes).
The reason I'm a bit confused is that I recently grabbed the April
patch kit for 4.0C from the canonical FTP site, and in the back of
the "Release Notes and Installation Instructions" there are tables
titled "Release Family Upgrade Information", which give details on
which versions one can upgrade to, from which other versions.
In the entry for V4.0C it says "Installs on AlphaStation 450 only".
Now that's clearly wrong, since it obviously installs on the PW/au
machines as well. (Though perhaps they mean that the AS450 is the
only machine which supports upgrading to V4.0C from other versions.)
In any case, the implication is that V4.0C is one of those releases
that exist to support new hardware, but isn't considered a "general"
release.
On the other hand, the same page implies that V4.0B can be installed
anywhere. But does the "Includes DIGITAL UNIX Version 4.0B" on the
V4.0C CD thus imply that I can use this CD to do an installation on
our older systems? (It'll be a from-scratch install onto a virgin
disk, not an upgrade install, since we have to do some repartioning
of the drives.)
If there's a helpful Digital person out there reading this (or, for
that matter, a knowledgeable user), I'd appreciate a clarification.
Many thanks.
