Limit to # of directories?

Hi everyone,

This is probably a stupid question, but I am still new to UNIX and figure
it is better to be safe than sorry.

Are there any serious disadvantages to creating approximately 1800 home
directories within a subdirectory called /usr/users/students?

Please see below for a bit of historical perspective, and why I should ask
such a thing.

In the past we have always subdivided our student home directories by class
year, i.e.,. /usr/users/1999, /usr/users/2000, etc. This is fine, in
general, but there are a significant number of students each year who
change class years. Moving all their home directories is one more thing to
do, that I'd rather not hassle with.

I'd like to change our approach this year and put all new student accounts
in /usr/users/students. In about 4 years that subdirectory will hold
approximately 1800 home directories. Our students do *not* have UNIX
accounts since our Alpha is used strictly for E-mail (with Eudora) which
means that their home directories just sit there and do nothing. They do
not accumulate files and are not accessed by the student.

I need to create about 500 accounts today, so your timely words of wisdom
would be most appreciated.

Debby
