Hi gurus!
We are having difficulties with our CD-ROM drive on our Alpha 2100. I got an
error that said:
%>mount -t cdfs -ro noversion /dev/rz6c /cdrom
/dev/rz6c on /cdrom: No such device
So, I tried another disk (even that particular CD had just worked on my
other Alpha -- CSLG-PAKs) and that didn't work, either. Bad, CD, I figured.
Called DEC, got an incredibly quick response, had someone come out and
replace the drive. Before we booted up, we successfully booted off the CD.
Hooray! Success! (or so we thought). I then attempted to mount the cd again.
Again, no luck. (Same error message.)
So I tried re-building the device files. Remove rz6*, ./MAKEDEV rz6 -- At
first, no luck. A few hours later, I was able to re-build rz6, but NOT rrz6.
In fact, the unsuccessful builds (all of them) gave me these error messages:
% ROOT::/dev> ./MAKEDEV rrz6
MAKEDEV: special file(s) for rrz6:
MAKEDEV: unknown device in: rrz6
Finally, I did a file /dev/rrz*c and got the following:
file: Format error at line 475: Incorrect type
(Well, I got 475 lines of the above, then what's below)
/dev/rrz0c: character special (8/2)
/dev/rrz10c: character special (8/18434) SCSI #1 RZ28 disk #80 (SCSI ID #2)
/dev/rrz4c: character special (8/4098)
/dev/rrz6c: character special (8/6146) SCSI #0 RRD43 disk #48 (SCSI ID #6)
/dev/rrz8c: character special (8/16386) SCSI #1 RZ28 disk #64 (SCSI ID #0)
/dev/rrz9c: character special (8/17410) SCSI #1 RZ28 disk #72 (SCSI ID #1)
I'm stumped. I can't call Digital quite yet because our VP is running the
process which creates all of our new student's accounts and, understandably,
does not want that interrupted. (And I just know Digital would call back and
want me to down my system.)
Any ideas? Please? :)

P.S. I know I haven't posted a summary yet for my margin problem.
Unfortunately, that has become secondary to this and I have not yet tried
any of the solutions.
