Sony SDT-S9000 DAT drive under Digital Unix 4.0c

I'm encountering a strange problem using a Sony DDS3 DAT drive on a
DPW 500au running Digital Unix 4.0c. Basically, I can read tapes that
were written on another computer using a Digital TLZ06 DDS2 DAT drive
but can't read tapes that were written on this computer by this drive.

When I try to restore after dump, I get the following error:
        Tape read error: I/O error
When I try to 'tar xvf /dev/nrmt0h', I get the following error:
        tar: [offset 0]: I/O error
In both cases, writing the tape does not cause an error.

This problem only arises when I try to read tapes using the Sony
SDT-S9000 drive that were written using that Sony SDT-S9000 drive.

My configuration:

        Digital Personal Workstation 500au
        Digital Unix 4.0c
        Sony SDT-S9000 DDS3 DAT drive
        KZPAA-AA F/W SCSI adapter

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
