corrupted mail spool

At least 25 mail spools are getting corrupted on our system each day.
We're running DEC Unix 3.2 without patches. I'm getting the patches for
sendmail and /bin/mail.

But has anybody seen anything like this?

Garbage characters get inserted between the beginning of the line and the
"From ..." field info. For example, we see something like this in vi:

#From user_at_somewhere.com date time..

where the # represents the garbage characters.
Our mail agent Eudora (or the pop3d program, Qualcomm's version, I think)
chokes when it sees the garbage.

I don't if it's Unix, sendmail, /bin/mail, pop3d or something else. The
corrupted mail message comes from amny different sources including internal
users and various internet sites. the only pattern I see is right now is
that it seems to happen more often in the late afternoon.

Actually, the garbage consists of four bytes:
1: null
2: 255
3: null
4: 255

then the normal From line starts.

This always happens in the same place (before the From) and always the same
garbage.

Any ideas are appreciated.

thanks,
Jon
