Has anyone successfully installed a Sony SDT-S9000/BM DDS3 DAT drive
(firmware 0123) on any kind of Unix workstation?
I've tried installing mine on
1. Digital Alpha/Digital Unix 4.0c/KZPAA-AA
2. Digital Alpha/Digital Unix 4.0c/Intraserver 3280U
3. Intel i686/Linux 2.0/BusLogic BT-958
without success. The drive has scsi id 2 with passive termination,
and there are no scsi id conflicts. No matter how I set the
configuration switches on the drive, it behaves the same way on all
three systems. It responds to mt commands correctly and can read DAT
tapes that were written on other machines using other DAT drives. But
if I try to read a tape that was written on that drive, I get an I/O
error. This is true for dump/restore and for tar, regardless of
whether I use a DDS2 or DDS3 tape. (Yes, I am rewinding the tape
before attempting to read it.)
Under Linux 2.0, these errors are logged as follows:
st0: Error with sense data: extra data not valid \
Current error st09:00: sns = 70 3 ASC=31 ASQ= 0
Raw sense data:0x70 0x00 0x03 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x12 \
0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x31 0x00 0x00 0x00
Under Digital Unix 4.0c, these errors are logged with
error code x70, sense key x03 and the same ASC=x31 and ASQ=x00.
I've contacted Sony technical support to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Eric
