Total renumber of ip address space

We have been informed by our LIR that our current ip address space has to
be returned and a new set of class C's used. As an ISP this is a bad
blow to put it mildly. The thought of helping unsophisticated users
through a reconfig process - all on the phone at the same time because
they have not read their support news - is worrying.
WE wanted to do this renumber in two stages, the comms servers like
decserver 700,s, 90m,s etc in one go, and the main alpha and routers
later as they would affect settings such as gateways and dns address.
This seems to be impossible as the new class C's are not in the same
class A much less class B as the ones we are currently using. As far as
I can see the comms and alpha will
have to be in the same ethernet segment address ie in the same class C so
upgrading the two at different times seems impossible.

Has anybody gone through this nightmare and if so can they give any
guidelines and point to addresses which have to be changed eg where DO
you change the fundamental ip address of tu0 the Alpha itself?? and is it
repeated elsewhere? Will we have to rebuild the dns? etc etc
If we get sufficient replies put together it may make a decent cookie or
faq entry.
