I wonder if anyone can cast some light on a solution to the
following problem. We have recently upgraded our Alpha's from OSF1/3.2
to DU 4.0. Sometime before the upgrade we installed an Iomege Jaz
drive on one of the machines. Under 3.2, we were able to use an
existing disklabel file as a proxy for the Iomega Jaz - it was not
perfect but worked well enough for our purposes. We didn't use a
disktab written specifically for the Jaz. We were able to write labels
to fresh disks without any problems.
With DU 4.0, the Jaz drive reads all the old disks (as one would hope)
but I have been unable to persuade the machine to label any new
disks. Our Jaz is on rz12 and whenever we try to copy a disklabel to
the disk we get an "unknown disk type" for the disklabel we are trying
to write to the Jaz - yet we know for certain that that disk exists!
So, in a nutshell, following the procedure for labelling and creating
a new Jaz disk that used to work under OSF1/3.2 appears not to work
under DU 4.0. Does anyone know how to get this to work? By the way, I
was not using a disklabel specifically designed for the Jaz drive, but
rather a disklabel for an existing disk.
I noticed that someone (Tom Webster) had sometime ago posted a summary
which mentioned that there was a perceived bug in V4.0 disklabel which
would explain this behaviour. Has there been any patch to this?
I am wary of messing around or re-creating a new disklabel I don't
know what effect this would have on the disks that were labelled with
the old labels - would it make them un-readable?
Can anyone suggest a solution? Will I have to start from scratch and
create a new disklabel for the Jaz files at the risk of making the old
disks un-usable? Or is there a work around using the old disklabel
files?
