Why won't DE500 auto-negotiate speed?

Hello!

I just installed a DE500 in an Alpha system running DU4.0A.
This card is unwilling to be set to auto-negotiate speed
(100 Mb/sec vs. 10 Mb/sec) and it will not talk to the
Ethernet switch if the port there is set to auto-negotiate
speed.

I'm not positive which variant of the DE500 this card is,
but it says 500X on the PCB--does that make it a DE500-XA?

When the system boots, the card is identified as
21140-AA: Revision: 1.2.

At the console prompt, if I attempt to "set ewb0_mode auto"
the system responds with the message "Auto negotiation not
supported. Change mode to Twisted Pair." However, if I show
a list of the allegedly supported ewb0_mode settings,
auto-negotiation is one of the valid choices. Any ideas
why this discrepancy?

My Ethernet switch is a Bay Networks 301 Ethernet Switch.

When I set the port on the switch to autosense 10 or 100 Mb/sec
and set the DE500 to Fast mode, the DE500 does not connect.

When I set the port on the switch to autosense 10 or 100 Mb/sec
and set the DE500 to Twisted Pair mode (10 Mb/sec) the DE500
does connect.

When I explicitly set the port on the switch to 100 Mb/sec
and set the DE500 to Fast mode, the DE500 does connect.

Ideally, I would prefer to leave both the card and the switch
port set to auto-negotiate. Any ideas why I can't set the
card to do so and why the card won't interface to the port
when it is?

Regards,
Jon
