Hello fellow managers,

We're running an AlphaStation 4/166 with DU3.2c, 64 Mo RAM, 5Gb HD, 384 Mo swap.
You'll tell me this is a lot of swap, but listen to this:

With last version of top (3.4), we have noticed that :
* Real memory could never exceed 29 M over 59 M avail
* Virtual memory could never exceed 80M over 384 M avail
* When virtual mem reaches 70 M approx., machine begins to slow down, 74M -> the machine is on its knees (system calls approx. 15%) , 80 M -> even the console shell is unbearably slow and system calls go to 30% or something.

Here is a list of the main daemons running on the machine (cos that's its use, we cant have a better one) :
44 0 35M 31M sleep 97:38 8.00% ircd
44 0 12M 7938K sleep 10:19 1.90% rom
44 0 3664K 139K sleep 0:46 0.10% leopopup
44 0 1536K 90K sleep 0:20 0.00% httpd
44 0 1216K 57K sleep 0:09 0.00% rwhod
44 0 1384K 57K sleep 0:08 0.00% telnetd
32 -12 1480K 98K sleep 0:06 0.00% xntpd
44 0 1480K 81K sleep 0:02 0.00% snmpd
44 0 1384K 49K sleep 0:00 0.00% telnetd

When we add 2 or 3 emacs, 3 or 4 irc clients (cause this a students' machine), and 6 or 7 telnets, the machine is unbearably slow.
Anyone knows about this "limitation" ?
Thanx in advance. More details on request.
