Backward binary compatibility

Hi managers...

We've just started thinking about upgrading to Dec Unix 4.0, from our
current 3.2 & I got to wondering if the following will work.

We want to upgrade our development Alpha to 4.0 first, then run with it
for a number of days (weeks?) before upgrading our main live machine.
During this period of time there are bound to be requirements for some
bugfixing/new reports etc.

What I would like to know is whether the binaries produced by 4.0 will
run on a machine running 3.2? We use Ingres/ABF/Embeded SQL in C etc.

Has anyone tried this, specifically with Ingres? Are there any other
pitfalls which we should avoid when upgrading...

Many thanks for your time, I will summarize,
