UNIX Backups

I am a VMS System Manager who has just been given responsibility for an Alpha
1000 running Digital Unix V3.2c. The system has one disk, a DAT drive and
CD/ROM.

If this were a VMS system, I would back it up by shutting it down, booting
minimal VMS from the CD and doing an image backup of the disk to tape. This
would allow me to restore individual files, or the entire disk in the event of
a hardware failure.

I would like to do the same for this system but am confused by the several
utilities available (eg tar, dump) and whether the system has to be shutdown
to single user mode or what. The notes from a course I took several years
ago were of no help, and the manuals don't describe this type of
backup.

Any help/advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
