Well,
its been a long time coming but I finally have my CDE login problem resolved.

My Original Message:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  I recently received an Alpha 433au workstation running OSF1 V4.0 564.32.
The system was setup with a hostname that was later changed to another
on a different subnet. All the appro changes were made in rc.config and
/etc/hosts but the CDE login process hangs when attempting to login.
Logging in via the command prompt or through the failsafe session works
fine.

I found a DEC tech support page which outlines a similar problem.
http://www.partner.digital.com/www-swdev/pages/Home/TECH/faqs/dunix/gboards.html
I made the appro controller and ident additions to the kernel config file
but the login still hangs.

Has anyone had this experience and solved it? Thanks.

RESOLUTION:
After a bit of back and forth with DEC support they were able to finally
resolve it by having me turn on the portmapper. It turns out that CDE with
the network running expects you to be running NIS and/or NFS. I expressed
my disatisfaction with the "feature". Hope this helps anyone out there
having similar trouble.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem caused by a hostname of 33 characters.
After changing the hostname to 31 characters CDE login works fine.

hope it helps you

Paul,

you may try to log in without CDE, and then remove the .dt directory
under you home directory.

Than restart CDE again ...

If you agree with me, tell the CSC you think this is bug
and that it should be fixed. I'm sure there is some value
to being network aware, but I got a couple of systems so
messed up, I decided to reinstall.

Been there. A supposed feature of CDE is that it is "network aware". But
it is entirely too network aware for its own good, since the slightest
change to the network configuration causes the problem you're seeing.
I'm lead to believe (and so far agree) that the solution is to add a
line "export DTNONETWORK=true" to /.dtprofile, logout, log back in and
then make the network changes. You'll have to change the network
configuration back to do this. This changes make it network-unaware
for the duration of the change. You can undo the change when it is
complete and stable.

So the steps are:

1. Boot to single user and restore the old network configuration.
2. Reboot or continue to multi-user.
3. Login, change /.dtprofile and logout.
4. Login, change the network configuration, cycle through single
    user or reboot.
5. Login, unchange /.dtprofile and continue.

There may be a release note on the supposed feature.

Hi,

Not that it is much help but I received my 433au's in similar
state but had no such problems. My CDE just hangs about once a week
while in operation.
