I've figured out how to solve my kernel makefile problem. Previously
I was logged in as myself and did an "su" to become root. When I
logged out and logged in as root from the start everything worked fine.
I don't really know the exact cause of the problem, and I'm not sure
I care. It must have to do with some environment variables or
something like that. In any case, I am now able to rebuild my
driver. I haven't gotten any replies to my original question yet,
but if anyone knows the exact cause of my problem I'd still be
interested in hearing it.
