My original question is appended after my sig.
I received a response to my question from
Paul Tyler <pct_at_ansto.gov.au>
Paul had obviously looked into this quite a bit, because he had excellent
information for me.
The answer to my question is a qualified "No"; there is currently no *direct*
player for MPEG audio layer 3 for Digital Unix that I'm aware of. However,
there is source code available on the Internet that can decode MP3s to some
other format (AIFF, PCM, et. al.), and then you can use audioplay or some
other tool to play the audio. Paul had been using a decoder that he had
tweaked a bit, but he wasn't very happy with it. After my question we
corresponded a bit about other options and he subsequently found a better
decoder, mpg123. I've tried it and it works very well for me, even on my
AlphaStation (a 4/166).
One other option Paul mentioned is using FreePort Express to translate
a SunOS 4.x MPEG audio player to Digital Unix. I didn't investigate this
option mostly because my workstation probably doesn't have the performance
necessary to make this a viable solution.
For more info about MPEGs, check out
http://www.mpeg.org
For info on mpg123, check out
http://www.sfs.nphil.uni-tuebingen.de/~hipp/mpg123.html
If you go to
http://mpg.123.org
you will find a list of links to collections of mp3 files. There are some
pretty impressive audio clips available, including just about any "favorite
song" you might have.
Thanks again to Paul!

All-
A co-worker of mine has downloaded about half a Gig of MP3 audio files from
various sites on the Internet, and he's been razzing me that he can play them
on his SGI workstation using some freeware MPEG software. I haven't been able
to locate an MP3 player for Digital Unix. Considering how awesome MP3 audio
files are compared to other audio formats, it would be *really* nice to have
one.
I was hopeful that Digital's "Sound and Light" group would have ported one
of the free ones to DU 4.x, but I haven't been able to find one on any of
the Digital sites. Anyone know where there might be one that would compile
and work on DU 4.x?
I will of course summarize.
