X server runaway

I recently swapped the graphics card in my Alphastation 600/333
from an 8 bit card to a 24 bit card (ZLXp1 --> ZLXp2). To take
advantage of the 24 bit card in X, I changed the first line of
the configuration file Xservers to

 :0 local /usr/bin/X11/X -nice 2 -vclass TrueColor

but since then my X server has developed a nasty prediliction for
soaking up as much CPU as is available. I don't know what sets
it off but when it starts running away I have to log out to kill
the process.

Any helpful hints?
