SUMMARY: Oracle 7.3.3.0.0 Installation Troubles ....

Hello,

Well: This time, Oracle support was faster than the list :-).
The solution was to use a different CD-ROM drive for mounting
the Oracle Server CD. I have a third party CD-ROM drive on my
Alpha which apparently has problems with UFS formatted CDs.

The file in question, rpc.vrf had some garbage at the beginning
which caused the problem. This is strange, though. I never
had any problems with this particular CD-ROM drive. I can even
boot Digital Unix from it. It's a Toshiba XM-3801TA.

When I mounted the CD in an original DEC CD-ROM drive on a DEC
3000/600, the file looks o.k. I've NFS mounted this CD-ROM
directory on my main alpha and I'm currently installing via NFS
without problems.

Thanks to Paul Grant <paul.grant_at_kscl.com> for his fast reply
as well.

Appended is his reply and my original posting. BTW: Using the
text based interface did not help.

I take it your trying to run the motif version of orainst....
If so please check with your oracle support as there are known problems
associated with MOTIF and Oracle under DU4.0#. Could you try the old
fashioned text based interface as this will provide
the same functionality and get you passed this problem.....

Subject: Oracle 7.3.3.0.0 Installation Troubles ....

Hello,

I know that this is not quite a Digital Unix related question but anyway:
I'm trying to install Oracle 7.3.3.0.0 under Digital Unix 4.0b. I've
completed all pre-installation tasks and then started "orainst /m"
from the CD-ROM. When it comes to checking the package dependencies
it stops with this message:

rpc.vrf(1): 'Start block token' expected when '186' found

Even when I select only one package (the Oracle Server alone,
for instance) it get this message.

It looks as if some rpc verification fails but I can't figure out what.

Any idea anyone? I'm attaching my .cshrc file.

Thanks -- Tom
