SUMMARY: ddr.dbase & AIT drives

The information is not good on this, here's the response from Digital:-

> "The kind of performance you are seeing is consistant with Networker
> not recognising the device. Editing the DDR entry by hand to "force"
> NetWorker to "recognize" the device is faught with peril.
>
> Sony *must* provide you the DDR entry info. Yes, we are looking at the
> AIT drives, but haven't info (yet), and no, they are not yet supported."

And here's the response from Sony:-

> Rememeber those switches we played around with last week, on the
> underside of the drive, well Sony are claiming support for Digital
> Workstation VMS and Ultrix.
>
> SW 3 and SW 4 in the ON position, sets up variable block mode, signed
> residual on space reverse and system device file control.

I haven't had a chance to play with these setting yet, and I don't think I
am going to bother, we are more than likely go with a solution from Sun
and Solaris, as they do infact support the Sony AIT drive with Legato.

If anyone has any experience with these drives and Digital Unix I would be
very interested to hear from you.

Jonathan

Original post follows:-

Hi, I'm trying to configure a Sony AIT drive for use on Digital Unix 4.0b.

I've spoken to Digital's technical support and they have told me that they
are rebadging these drives as an TSZ20. So I've copied the ddr.dbase entry
for this device and renamed it from:-

Name = "DEC" "TZS20"

to

Name = "SONY" "SDX-300C"

However I cannot be sure that it's taken the new entry. When I ask the
drive for a status (mt -f /dev/nrmt0h status) I get a report to console:-

[1/0/0] ctape_ioctl: unmapped scsi density code (0x30) - DDR entry needed

Which I was getting previous to adding this entry.

Now I can add a line to the ddr.dbase:-
    scsi_tape_density[0x30] = "Sony SDX300C" 116000 32768

but this would require the table length to be increased from 0x30 to 0x31
which is illegal according to the man page:-

> + For VERSION 1, this data line must be:
> scsi_density_table_size = 0x30

Any help appreciated

Regards,

Jonathan
