Hi Everyone -
I actually sent a Summary at 1312 this afternoon but it never showed
up in my mail. In the first hour I had 10 replies. Most everyone said
that the Ctrl-C should work and about half of those said exactly when
I should type the Ctrl-C. I was typing the Ctrl-C soon enough and it
has worked on my other machines in the past, but just not my 400 4/233.
Other people suggested a Ctrl-P. I hadn't tried that, I did remember
it from my Vaxen and PDP-11 days, but that did not work.
Sean O'Connell said,
One quick and dirty trick would be to shut the machine down and
pull the scsi cable out of the boot disk for one go and then turn
the power back on, and once you get the >>> (or secure prompt).
set auto_action halt
Turn off the machine and reattach the scsci cable.
It's ugly, but it ought to work.
He's right, it is ugly, but it Worked! Thanks and kudos, Sean!
Mark Huehls said that Ctrl-C worked on his 400 4/233 so I will be
contacting him to find out what version of the firmware he is using.
Dr. Tom Blinn of Digital, whom I personally call the alpha-osf-managers
gift from God, gave the same suggestion that Sean O'Connell gave me.
Craig Hagan also had a suggestion along those same lines,
boot it from a different disk and mount up the existing drives.
ain't physical access great?
This would allow me to log on as root on another machine's disk and I
could have done a shutdown -h that way. The thing I didn't like was
that fact that I would need to have two machines down at the same time.
But is was a good suggestion.
I have received over 35 replies so don't feel slighted if I do not
have your name here, I have read your mail and I appreciate your reply.
I next tried to edit the root tcb file and it would not let me change
anything. I then thought, why not just change the password? When I
tried passwd or passwd root, the program came back with the reply,
password not changed becasue account has expired
I thought I had set root not to expire. Egads, what now?!?! I booted
off of cdrom and went into shell/system management and manually removed
any field that began with u_unsuc and deleted the u_expire field in the
root tcb file. I then rebooted and started the OS and Happy Days, it
came up and root could log on. I was able to delete the user account
we no longer needed and created the other two accounts we did need.
I am feeling much better now. :-)
Thank you again to everyone who replied. I don't know which makes
you feel better, getting help from this list, or being able to help
others through this list. My orignal post is after my signature

==> Subject: how to break into enhanced security machine
==>
==> Good Morning -
==>
==> I have an Alpha 400 4/233 machine that is separated from the network
==> and running enhanced security running DU 3.2c. I have been tasked
==> with removing certain accounts and placing the machine back onto the
==> network for all other users to use it remotely. I have not had a need
==> to log onto the machien since I made it secure in July.
==>
==> I logged in, or I should say, tried to log onto the machine as root
==> and was told that the account was disabled and to see the administrator.
==> Okay, I decided to try my personal account. It is also disabled.
==> Yeehaa! I then hit the reset button thinking that I had the machine
==> set to halt. Ha, no such luck, auto_action is set to boot. I read
==> in a past summary that you are to hit Ctrl-C to stop the boot process.
==> I tried 5 times and Ctrl-C would not work. Neither would Ctrl-D,
==> Ctrl-Y or Ctrl-T. Does anyone have any ideas how I can halt the
==> machine to boot to single user to allow me to work on the machine?
==>
==> Thank you,
==>
