3.2C -> 3.2G upgrade failed

A college is upgrading a Alpha 1000 from 3.2C to 3.2G. It got to the
kernel build and then failed with the following error message:

*** Exit 1(Ignored)
......

Can anyone have any ideas or suggest a course of action (he has already
logged a call with DEC).
