Thanks to Dr Tom Blinn who replied...

I'd go to the system's build directory (/sys/SYSTEMNAME) and clean it out,
then re-do the doconfig for the target kernel.

If that doesn't work, I'd deinstall all the kernel build components and
then re-load them from the installation media. You can use setld to do
this.

My guess would be there's something bogus in some file that's still sitting
in the build directory from the old installation that should have been but
was not cleaned out during the installupdate process. I've recently done
an installupdate from V3.2C to V3.2G on my DEC 3000 Model 900, and I didn't
see any problems.
---------

of which deleting and reinstalling the kernel build components fixed the
problem. An engineer from DEC also called and suggested reinstalling from
backup and ensuring that all patches are removed before applying the
update. This probably would have had the same effect but it may have taken
longer and I guess you are ensured of the integrity of the subsets from the
installation media.

Thanks,

Jason.
