[Question] Script to monitor space left on DLT

Managers,

I am routinely tarring archive logs from Oracle to DLT (IV) tape on a
TZ887. I need a way to tell how much space each tar file is taking up
on the tape and how much space is left.

I thought perhaps I could keep a text file with the total number of
blocks available on a new tape and then write a script to subtract the
number of blocks each tar files uses as tar writes to the tape.

Has anyone done anything like this who might be able to make suggestions
on how to go about this? Does this seem like a reasonable way to
monitor tape usage? Maybe there is something out there that already
does this that I am unfamiliar with.

Any advice/suggestion/criticism is welcome.

Thanks,

Susan
