A few days ago I asked:

>As stated several times on this list: According to Digital DU 4.0C
>(V4.0 564.32 alpha) is the same as DU 4.0B (V4.0 564 alpha) apart
>from support for new hardware. This can't be so.

>We use Mathematica quite a bit on our alphas. Unfortunately, this is
>so far only version 2.2.4 since v. 3.0 is not yet available for DU.
>Running the notebook (mathematica) on DU 4.0B gives, as far as I can
>see, no more problems than running it on DU 3.2. On 4.0C, however,
>when a command is ended with Shift+Return, a Local Interrupt dialog
>box comes up. One can then terminate mathematica, but unfortunately
>mathclient continues to run and has to be killed explicitly. Or,
>one can choose to continue, but then the same box just comes up
>again.

I got immediately several suggestions, but unfortunately none of them
solved the problem. After some time I also had a reply from the maker,
Wolfram Research. They had actually heard of the problem and found that
it is a license server problem. The first thing the mathematica kernel
does when started is to look for a license, which in my case is given
by a network license server. This works fine when the math. kernel is
started from the linemode interface, but not from the notebook on 4.0C.
Wolfram provided single machine passwords for our 4.0C systems in order
not to use the license server, and now also the notebook works.

I still got no answer to my question why things work on pre 4.0C systems
but not on 4.0C.

Cheers,

Bjorn
