HELP ME BEFORE I GET MAD AND DESTROY SOMETHING (or maybe someone)

I'm trying to dial-out using DEC's pppd under DU 4.x and I'm about to throw
the server out of the window !

It's been a whole week now that I try all sorts of things and it just does
not work right. Can anyone help me ?

First suspected problem: When I use 'tip' to talk to the modem at 38400bps,
I can connect to the cisco router (that is the ppp server) but I get Input
Silo Overflows in the system log and on the console log. This only happens
when I use tip, if I connect automatically with chat and pppd, the modem
connection at 38400 DTE speed (14400 modem speed) is OK and there are no
overflows. I think that I can eliminate this cause for my problems because
I also tried to connect at 9600 to be sure themodem speed was not the
problem and my pppd connections does not work at that speed either.

Second problem:

I'm using the full debug version with -v option for chat and here is the
problem:

If I put an address in /etc/ppp/options for my local machine, say 1.2.3.4:
than when the LCP negotiation is over and the IPCP negociation starts, pppd
tells me that the local IP address is 1.2.3.4 and the remote Ip address is
1.2.3.4 THAT DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE !

Anyway, my ppp server (the %??&!_at_%& cisco router) is supposed to GIVE ME MY
IP ADDRESS ! So I tried to use 0.0.0.0:0.0.0.0 in /etc/ppp/options, but
instead, it tries to negoiciate an ip address of 0.0.0.0 and tells me
"cannot assign requested IP address !"

This machine previously had an ethernet card with an IP address and I even
removed it to be sure there wasn't any conflict. In fact, if my PPP
connection works one day,I will be connecting to the same network that the
server was part of, except that I'll use a phone line. I am doing this to
move this server to a remote location and dial-in our LAN from time to time
over the phone.

Did anyone succesfully connected to another machine using only DEC's PPP ?

I had not a single problem doing the same thing from LINUX last year.
