SWXCR does not recognize 4.3Gb Hdd

I recently attempted to install 4 4.3Gb Hard Disks(RZ1CB-VW) into a
storageworks cabinet with 2 SCSI buses (via a 3 channel EISA
RAID controller - storageworks of course).

The drive designation is RZ1CB-VW. We were replacing 2 of 6 RZ28(and 28M)
drives with these new ones, plus adding two.

The drives were removed, the raid logical drives dismantled, and the
new drives inserted - upon re-initializing the software, the controller
was scanned on each channel/scsi id and none of the 4.3Gb drives were
recognized. The 4 2Gb Drives were listed properly though. We moved the
drives around and re-scanned - the new drives were still not detected.

We are running the standalone configuration utility that is supplied on
the FIRMWARE 3.8 CD. The ARC and SRM were updated by the same CD. We
even brought the raid controller up to 2.16 from 1.99 which is the newest
version we have. No banana. No apple. No fruit at all. We reset,
rebooted, powered off/on, screamed curses and incantations, all to no
avail. We performed the updates incrementally to allow us the best
chance to locate the problem. First we flashed the controller bios, then
we performed the system firmware upgrade.

It doesn't seem relevant but we are running DU3.2C on that machine. Since
the controller is failing to notice the drives before we are even close
to booting the OS, it seems unimportant.

More importantly, the machine is a DEC Alpha 2100 model 4/233. The
controller is EISA(not PCI). The cabinet is an eight bay dual plane
StorageWorks drive shelf inserted into the machine. We have been
running stably for 2 years with 2Gb drives.
