---------------- Original Post
------------------------------------------------------------

I did it.

I forgot to export DTNONETWORK=TRUE in my .dtprofile and removed my primary
network interface card form my computer.

Now, I can still get my machine to boot and go past the CDE login screen
(except that my hostnace is gone, I get a welcome to "") but I discovered
something weird:

In the dxconsole, I have a message telkling me something like:

rsh --: invalid parameters
usage: rsh -[ndx]....

Also, all 'p' characters now shows as 't' characters in my windows ! And
from the keyboard, when I type a 'p', I get a 't'. I think it is a display
problem. This seems to be the only character that does not display
properly.

Does anyone know how to fix it ? This is very annoying

---- Solution
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had no answer on this one. What I did was remove the .dt directory from
my hoem directory while not being in CDE. That did not solve the problem,
it was even worst, a LOT of characters were not displayed or displayed
incorrectly. I restarted CDE after setting DTNONETWORK=true in my
.dtprofile, that did not work either.

The solution was to le the DTNONETWORK=true, reconfigure my network adapter
and keep the old hostname I had before, and the problems were gone. After
that, I removed the DTNONETWORK=true from my .dtprofile.

I really do not know the usefulness of that switch (why isn't it ON all the
time ?) but I read in a previous summary that according to the DU 4.x
release notes:

4.6.8 CDE's Static Dependency on the Network

The Common Desktop Environment (CDE) provides
facilities and features for applications to
communicate in a networked environment. After the
network is configured and enabled, these features
become available each time a new desktop session is
started. After a desktop session has started, the
current session has a static dependency on the state
of the network configuration. Network and system
administrators should be very cautious about dynamic
changes to the network configuration while in a
               network aware desktop session.

Prior to making any dynamic network changes, such as
changing the state of your network adapter to off or
changing your primary network address, add the
following entry to the /.dtprofile file:

               export DTNONETWORK=true

The system administrator must then log out and back
in as root for the change to take effect. This
change removes the dependency on the state of the
network. Failure to do this may result in a session
hanging after clicking on a CDE icon, such as the
               screen lock or Exit icons.

After all network changes are completed, remove the
export DTNONETWORK=true entry from the /.dtprofile
               file.

I still wonder what would have happened to me if I HAD to remove that
inteface or modify the network in some way without being able to go back to
the old IP address adn/or hostname withou impacting everybody else in the
department. This dependancy on the network from CDE is NOT A GOOD THING
(They must have a good reason to have implemented it that way though).

What I can't figure out is how the nertwork configuration is related to
display problems !!!!!! Anyway, I don't have more time to lose on this but
I'm curious if you have an answer.

Thanks for any responses that might be on there way already
