The suggestions were many and since I had hoped for one clear suggestion I
was a bit disappointed at first, but I guess it is only positive with so
many answers (one great thing about this list).
Networker from Legato was a popular suggestion as a commercial product
while Amanda (www.amanda.org) was another one popular suggestion. Amanda
is freeware/shareware (I'm going to investigate this closer). I got one
suggestion to check out
ftp://ftp.ce.utexas.edu/ftp/unix/backup for
scripts using rsh, rcp, and cpio to a single tape drive. A couple of
suggestions included dumping 'dump' or 'vdump' through a 'rsh' through for
example the following command:
rsh <disk-machine> dump 0bsdf 60000 56000 - <partition> |
dd bs=56k of=/dev/nrvtape
