Managers,
Sorry for not summarizing sooner.
Apparently this is one of those error messages that tells you something
you don't really need to know about. None of my Alphas have the special
CI bus, so I don't really care if a CIPCA driver is running.
As for my video card, that was another problem. I can't find a graphics
driver for my S3Trio card (weird - this card has always configured with
no problems) and have configured it from ECU to run with the standard
VGA driver. This seems to work, and my 2100 is now upgraded and happily
chugging along on DU4.0B, jumbo patch 5 and all.
Now for Oracle 7.3.3.3.........................................
Thanks for the following responses:

A CIPCA is a hardware card for connecting to DEC's CI bus, a 40Mb/sec
storage subsystem which uses various peices of specialized external
hardware .
If you do not have a CIPCA card, the CI bus and the associated star
coupler and HSJ or HSC disk controller hardware you should not need the
CIPCA driver. I am not sure to what extent this hardware is supported
under Digital Unix anyway.
It should not affect your graphics. That is probably a different
problem. I recall that we encountered that some of the newer firmware
revisions don't play well with some of the older video cards. I think
the solution from DEC was to install an earlier firmware revision. We
did without the graphics...

>From alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com:
1. A device driver for the CIPCA. I don't know if this is a
console level driver or the operating system driver. Digital
UNIX certainly doesn't have a driver for the CIPCA. It may
also be that the console knows that Digital UNIX doesn't
support the CIPCA and doesn't bother to load or activate
whatever driver it has, hence the message.
2. If the console is the source of the message, it probably
means that the console won't be able to do I/O with the
adapter. Which is fine, since the operating system won't
either.
3. The few times I've booted Digital UNIX on a system with
a CIPCA, it didn't seem to affect the graphics. But,
that was some time ago and only for a short time.
Having a CIPCA in a Digital UNIX systems seems to be a waste of
a fairly expensive piece of hardware. If you have an OpenVMS
system that needs a CI adapter it would be better off there.
If you plan to boot Digital UNIX and OpenVMS, then it shouldn't
hurt
