SUMMARY DEC 3000, is it possible to direct terminal to serial port

Thanks to everyone who replied,
 The solution seems to be that small silver toggle switch on the back of
the machine.
Just a flick of this switch and the console is in serial mode.
Connect a terminal, reboot and voila it works fine.
