1) Yes, I'm as sick of spam as anyone else. But I'm not going to
institute draconian measures to stop the occasional spam message to
this list. It's annoying, but if it takes more than one keystroke
to delete a spam, you need to find a better mail agent.
2) The list *could* be configured to allow only subscribers to post,
but there are problems with that. First, many subscriber's
addresses have changed since they subscribed to the list--a host
name has changed, MTA masquerading has been enabled, or they're
forwarded their mail from an old account. Second, some people
subscribe via local exploders. Submissions from both of these
groups would bounce; they'd be confused and/or complain to me, and
I'd have to work with them to update their subscription address. I
don't have time for that. Also, some people read the list via the
web archives, or don't even read the list at all. This change would
require them to subscribe.
3) We're not going to vote on this; this list isn't a democracy. I'll
listen to any complaints and suggestions anyone has, but in the end
the decision is mine.
4) Future gripes should be sent directly to me, not the list.
