According to halt(8), the following are among options to the halt command:
-n Prevents the sync before stopping, and does not log the halt
using syslog
-q Causes a quick halt, does not log the halt using syslog, and
makes no attempt to kill all processes
It is unclear, however, whether -q implies -n; does a "halt -q" sync the
disks? If not, what are the dangers of using "halt -q" do quickly halt the
system, as during a denial-of-service attack (to take one example) where
runaway loads may make a neat shutdown last for many minutes as syslogd and
other processes try to terminate neatly under the loaded conditions? Or is
there a better way to bring down the system in such circumstances?
Thanks in advance and happy new year,
Dave.
