Q: How to do backups without Advfs

Managers,

Currently I have an Alpha 1000 DU4.0A that is running Advfs. We do
our backups to all our data by doing a clone of the filedomains and then
backing up our clones while the system is online.

We are getting an Alpha 4000 DU4.0 and most likely we won't be
running Advfs on it because of the library software that will be running
on that machine. My question is - how do people who don't run Advfs back
up ufs filesystems while the system is running. Can it only be done only
by using something like LSM (of which I am unfamiliar with) or is there
other ways to do it.

The only 2 machines I have ever worked with is the DU4.0A with
Advfs and an Ultrix machine with ufs that has to be shut down to single
user to do the dumps.

        Any help would be appreciated.
