I have several HP laserjet printers which I am using TCP/IP to make my
connection to the network and printing to them. Generally this works except
at times to printer seem to disappear from the net. I can't print to them,
I can't ping them it's like they don't exist. Usually if I turn the
printers off and on then they will work again for a while. Any ideas or
suggestions?
Summary:
I didn't really get a good answer for this request but I got three responses.
1. I have the same problem let me know what you find out. I'll let you know
what I did and it has worked so far.
2. Please help me set up a printer on a UNIX box. I replied directly to
this person.
3. Use a spooler queue for it. I was and that is how I got the problem in
the first place.
Anyway, what I did and it has worked for a couple of days, which considering I
was gettting calls about every hour on the hour is an improvement, is change a
timeout. In the HP MIO setup menu on the printer there is an idle timeout.
It defaults to 90 seconds and I lowered it to 15 seconds. My logic was that
since all the printers were using the same port, 9100, in UNIX that one printer
was tying up the port and causing the others to hang. By lowering it to 15
seconds it seems to release the port quicker and haven't had them lock up yet.
Of course now that I'm sending this I'm sure I'll get a call informing me that
the printers are locked, hope not. Try this and let me know if it fixes
thing for you.
