Steve/All,
I have been on a course detailing upgrading from 3.2x to 4.0/4.0a, and
I would strongly advise against upgrading to anything before 4.0b, as
4.0 is highly unstable, and 4.0a is not much better.
If you do decide to go to 4.0 or 4.0a, you would be best off
reinstalling the OS. One of the many pitfalls which aborts the upgrade
is if you have installed any kernel patches: you must restore all
original kernel object files, or the upgrade will fail. This may be
difficult/impossible if you have not been rigorous in keeping details
of patches installed.
Additionally, the course manual says that the following layerd
products must be removed from the system prior to performing the V4.0
update install (using setld -d <subset_name>):
ASE - DECsafe Available Server
DNA - DECnet
IOS - Worldwide Language Support
O3D - Open 3D
TCR - TruCluster Software
To find the subset names, do a directory of
/usr/.smdb./<SSCODE>*.lk
where SSCODE is the 3-character code in the list above.
If you have any more specific queries on differences, please let me
know.
regards,
Matt

PS - could you put your email address on your submission? (It's not
included in the mail I receive from "alpha-osf-managers-relay").
