howdy,

        i have an alphaserver 1000a 4/233; when installing the 4.0b os for
the first time - after running the current 1.10 ecu, installing the 3.8
firmware, and running arc - booting from the generic kernel produces the
following interesting lines upon boot (interesting lines are prefixed by
==>):

 Checking local filesystems

and after registering the proper lmf licenses, lmf reset shows:
 Error determining SMM for OSF-BASE DEC
 Error determining SMM for NET-APP-SUP-200 DEC

as a test, i put the same licenses on an identically configured 1000a,
with no problems.

dec support felt that the lmf LURT table might be corrupted; i reinstalled
the os again, both with 4.0a, then 4.0b; same result. dec then suggested
a possible hardware problem, so the local dec field office fellow came in
and swapped first the cpu board, then the mother board. all in all, they've
replaced *every* board in the cabinet.
