hi there,
Thanks for the replies. monitor program does work fine. Looks like
one of the cpu in the machine is bad. I tried monitor on second machine
and it worked there. Well time to call dec. The sys_stat utility is great.
Thanks again.

Get my sys_stat utility - it will provide what you want:

Don't know if this will help but look at vmstat also.
Let me know the answer cause
eventually I'll have a 2nd cpu in our
alpha unix box I suspect!

Hi,
monitor does show both CPUs. Use m, on the main menu, and
select s on the CPU. Or am I missing something ?
Since you are a Eductaional site, and If you have DEC's CSLG/TEI
program in place in your University, then you should try PolyCenter Performance
Monitor/Advisor. I have installed following lmf based license paks -
POLYCTR-SID,MONITOR-UNIX, DATA-COL-UNIX, POLY-SC-GUI,POLY-SC-AGT.

You can invest in DEC Data Collector/Performance Analyzer, which will do
the job for you. PA will produce color graphs, pie charts, etc.

Use the freeware "top"
A number of places has the utility, try "eecs.nwu.edu:/pub/top"

To see the 2 CPU's activity, you can use the following command:
# kdbx -k /vmunix
kdbx > cpustat -update #seconds
where #seconds is a delay.
Also you can use :
# psrinfo
This show you cpu status. (you can use it with -n o -v flag)
To see the memory utilization, you can use:
# vmstat
To see the swap utilization :
# swapon -s

Monitor should show multiple CPUs on the 2100. What
version of Digital UNIX and Monitor are you using?
The distribution includes an example program that
gets the stats for multiple CPUs.

I use monitor on our 2100 5/250 and it showed 2 cpus OK and now it shows
4 :-)
