Basically all said that pax command is a combination of tar and cpio, created to merge the two most commond archiving tools and is becomming a unix standard, also hace some efficiency improvements.
The pax utility is a superset of the IEEE Std1003.2 (``POSIX'') standard.
The pax command exists on the systems following systems checked so far (Digital Unix 4.0a, Sun
Solaris 2.5, IBM AIX 4.1, HP HP-UX 9.0, SGI Irix 6.2) except Linux.
