Perl5 interface to dbm and ndbm

I just compiled Perl v5.003 and found that the db interface "dbmopen"
doesn't work correctly. I have the libdb and libdbm shared libraries as
well as the "DB_File.pm", "NDBM_File.pm", and "ODBM_File.pm" Perl modules.

I can neither create databases nor read existing ones.

Any ideas on possible modules to include in my scripts or shared
libraries to install?
