The problem:
The DEC-supplied Allied Telesis repeater used to connect one of my DEC
3000/300's 10Base-T port to a 10Base-2 network failed, and I wanted to
know if it was possible to do away with the repeater and replace it with
a media converter (which I mistakenly called a 'transceiver').
The answer:
All of the following solutions work - in order of cost they are:
1. A small hub
2. A media converter
3. A repeater
I have gone for option 1. not just because it's the cheapest, but it also
gives me 7 other ports in the same room as the Alpha for free! (not that
I _need_ all 7 extra ports you understand, but I'll take advantage of 'owt
for nowt' as they say in Yorkshire).
TIA,
Chris

PS. For those of you who can't translate easily, 'owt for nowt' means
'anything that costs nothing'.
