There were some great suggestions to try to fix this problem,
but the actual fix came from Digital CSC.

The problem was when I installed a product on the Unix box, it
replaced the /sbin/init.d/inet file with its own file. This
file messed up how the network cards get configured. So,
I need to go to the engineers for the product and tell them
their /sbin/init.d/inet file doesn't work. The DU4.0a inet
file works fine for the 2 network cards.

Hi,

I am trying to install a new system (alphaserver 400) with 2
network cards. At the moment, it is not connected to the
net and I have the 2 network cards plugged in with their
own loop back connectors.

I installed DU4.0A on the system (fresh install). Problem is,
I can only get 1 network card to work. The setup is as follows....

de435 network card address 204.5.24.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 tu0
de450 network card address 204.5.25.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 tu1

Both the networks cards have the same hostname.

If I delete the tu0 card in netsetup, I can then ping the
tu1 card. If I add the tu0 card again, I can no longer ping
the tu1 card which comes up as "Network is down", but I can then
ping tu0.

Also, if I run "rcinet restart", an error comes up as...
/sbin/rc3.d/S01inet: test: unknown operator tu0 - but the
tu0 card does comes up. This error comes up whether I have
one card defined or both.

my rc.config looks ok I think. NUM_NETCONFIG is set to 2.
NETDEV_0=tu0, NETDEV_1=tu1. IFCONFIG_0 and 1 are set
appropriately.

If I do netstat -r the flags on both networks are U.

I have only run netsetup and bind setup so far on this system
and installed the licenses.

Any suggestions with this?

thanks,
Allan
